Dams

The District owns and operates 8 flood control structures (dams) in Rockingham County. An additional 3 dams are owned by the District but maintained by their associated localities of the Town of Luray and the City of Harrisonburg. In an effort to comply with state dam safety regulations, annual owner's inspections are conducted. The District is currently working with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to complete inundation studies for 8 dams and upgrading the dams to meet current dam safety regulations. The District works with the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), the U.S. Forest Service, DCR, and other cooperating agencies to ensure the safety of our local watersheds.
