The Virginia Envirothon is a natural resources competition for high school students. Students work in teams of five students. The teams are tested on their knowledge of natural resources - soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatics and a current environmental issue. Written and hands-on problem solving is required along with an oral presentation formulating a strategy for addressing an environmental issues problem. The Shenandoah Valley Soil and Water Conservation District sponsors a local competition. The winner at the local competition advances to the area and potentially the state competition. The state winner represents Virginia in the National Envirothon.
Last year's Shenandoah Valley SWCD local competition was held on Tuesday, April 5th, 2011 at Riven Rock Park in western Rockingham County. The results of the 2011 Shenandoah Valley SWCD Local Envirothon Competition were as follows:

First Place - Harrisonburg High School
Second Place - Turner Ashby High School
Third Place - East Rockingham High School - Team A
