Residential BMP Cost-Share Program
The Shenandoah Valley Conservation District offers a Residential BMP Cost-Share Program. The program provides financial assistance to residents to repair or replace failing septic systems or to install a septic system to replace a straight pipe. The program also offers financial assistance for septic system pumpouts. This program is only available to residents who live in the Smith Creek watershed in Rockingham County as well as the Mill Creek and Hawksbill Creek watersheds in Page County. Using water quality monitoring performed by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, these streams were found to have exceeded water quality standards for fecal coliform bacteria. The study set Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for bacteria that if attained would meet water quality standards. The study also identified pollutant reductions needed from various sources to meet the TMDL. Failing septic systems and straight pipes were found to be one of the causes. The District has received funding to help address fecal coliform bacteria coming from failing systems and direct discharge from a straight pipe into the streams.
If you live in one of these watersheds and have a failing septic system or are maintaining your septic system by getting a septic pumpout, please contact the District to find out how to sign up for the program. These funds are limited so contact us soon!
